VASCO: Two inmates of Sada sub jail assaulted an escort policeman inside the jail premises after being denied police escort services on Tuesday.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohan Naik, the incident occurred at 3.30 pm, when head constable Paresh Vishwanath Faldessai, who is also attached with Sada Jail’s Police Escort Cell, informed jail officials that they would could not provide police escort services to inmates in the afternoon batch due to a staff shortage.
“The moment Faldessai informed the jail staff, an inmate Wasim Kaligar, who is facing trial on rape charges, shoved the officer to the ground. Another inmate Abhinandan Patil, who is facing trial on murder charges, then assaulted Faldessai on his head with a plastic chair in a fit of anger,” said Naik.
A complaint has been filed at Mormugao Police Station and a case under sections 324 and 353 read with section 34 of IPC has been registered against both the accused.
Meanwhile, sources informed that the escort police officials who visited the jail after the incident were surprised to note that the jail staff, without confirming the escort service and other formalities, brought the accused out of lock up, leading to the incident near the jail’s main entrance.
