VASCO:  The solid waste treatment plant (SWTP) at at Headland Sada has treated 10,000 tonnes of waste in ten days, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik claimed on Thursday.

The minister made the claim when he and Mormugao Councillors Murari Bandekar, Leo Rodrigues, Shashikant Parab, Damodar Kaskar were inspecting the newly set up plant.

“Around 10,000 metric tonnes of waste has been treated within ten days time. The legacy waste will be cleared before monsoon,” Naik claimed on the occasion.

“After ten days of functioning of this plant, I got to know that 10,000 metric tonne of waste has been treated.  We have applied for proper electricity connection for this plant to operate which is likely to come soon. The contractor has set up two high capacity generators so that the plant continues to function and treat the waste. Around 50 workers are working in this plant systematically,” he said.

He further assured that the legacy waste will be cleared before monsoon. “And now it is proven that this plant works efficiently. The plant does not have a foul smell,” he said.

Councillor Bandekar said that the technology was brought by Minister Naik to treat legacy waste. “People usually have issues related to foul smell of this waste. But in this plant there are no stray dogs, flies, eagles, stray cattle etc. If this technology as expressed by Chief Minister Sawant is brought in Goa by setting up such plant then the major issue of Garbage can be solved easily,” he added.

Councillor Shashikant Parab said that the people of Sada were facing garbage issues since past 25 years. “There were numerous resolutions taken during council meetings to solve the garbage issue but the garbage issue had remained unresolved for a long time. But recently when Minister Naik brought the SWTP, we can say looking at its functioning that soon the Sada people will get relief from the garbage issue,” he added.
