The anti-burglary squad (ABS) of Crime Branch (CB) had arrested undertrials Anil Bhoe, Rahul Jadhav of Belgaum and ex-convict Mohammed Saddique from Ponda on charges of robbery-cum-assault at the residence of Raj Gomes. Bhoe is said to have masterminded the robbery from inside Sada jail.
CB sources said the prime accused confessed of operating from cell number 14 where he had hidden the mobile phone he had used to plan the robbery. However, when the investigation team escorted the accused last Saturday to raid the cell, the prison officials denied them entry.
The team then issued summons to assistant superintendent of Sada jail Bhanudas Pednekar to appear for questioning on Monday.
“He was questioned from morning till afternoon after which the police team once again visited the jail premises. This time we were not stopped from carrying out the raid but surprisingly nothing was found in the cell,” ABS official told Herald.
Police said they suspect the evidence had been wiped off before the team could reach there. “We will now focus on questioning jail officials,” he said. Another visit at the jail is expected.
