VASCO: The residents of Headland Sada in Mormugao on Saturday raised strong objection to the dumping of thrash in an open area allegedly by the Mormugao Port authorities.
According to the locals, they were shocked to find a site having a pit near Japanese garden used by the port authorities to dump their garbage including medical waste.
On Saturday, a group of locals along with their ward Councillor Sandesh Mesta even stopped a tempo that was carrying thrash while the labourers were attempting to dump it in the pit. Even police were called at the site and locals demanded stringent action against the people involved.
“We are already suffering due to the Mormugao Municipality owned garbage treatment plant located in our neighbourhood. To add to our problems, the MPT has now started dumping its garbage. We don’t know whether it is legal or illegal but we cannot allow the MPT to have such dumping site at Headland Sada, where MPT is dumping all kinds of thrash including medical waste that needs scientific disposal,” a local said.
Councillor Mesta said, “Currently we have door-to-door garbage collection across various wards. Our contractor has been regularly collecting garbage from MPT quarters, still what made MPT officials to dump their garbage including medical waste in a site which is close to residential area is a big question for all of us. I will raise this issue during our council meeting so that stringent action against those responsible for such illegal dumping is initiated.”
