CANACONA: A sugarcane plantation at Yeda in Cotigao was partially destroyed when a fire, set in an adjoining field to clear unwanted growth, spread to the plantation due to the winds on Saturday afternoon.
Fire and emergencies office at Canacona said that it received a fire call on Saturday afternoon that a sugarcane plantation has caught fire at Yeda, a tribal village of Cotigao in Canacona taluka. It took over an hour for the fire personnel to tackle the fire and stop it from spreading to adjacent plantation.
The fire team led by leading fire fighter Soiru Desai comprised of fire fighters Sandesh Gaonkar, Omresh Mokhardakar and Goutam Velip. The fire office has pegged the loss at over Rs 10,000 and other plantation worth over Rs 50,000 was saved.
