MARGAO: Locals have hit out at the government for making them pay for ‘public lighting duty’ in a sly addition to their monthly electricity bills, terming it as yet another financial burden for the common man.
“From this month’s bill, we are paying for public lighting duty. Has anyone read their electricity bill and compared it to their electricity bill of the previous month? Just look at the last component of your electricity bill break up. We are already paying light tax when we pay our house tax. Why are we being charged twice?” said one such irate resident.
“There should have been proper awareness created about such an addition to our bill along with a justification as to why we are being charged for this,” said Ian Fernandes from Varca.
Salcete citizens further pointed out that there are many areas where the streetlights are not functioning and wondered if their bills would increase if the lights began working.
