Salcete consumers upset over fat power bills

MARGAO: Upset over getting huge amount of electricity bills, the consumers from the Salcete villages on Sunday urged the State government to extend the due date period of the bills and allow them to pay in installments.

However, the officials of Electricity Department informed that no consumer has complained to the department of high amount of bills. Some consumers from Manora-Raia received bills ranging from Rs 1,400 to Rs 3,800 for the 67 days power consumption.

They mentioned that while the banks are giving a moratorium period for installments and the government is speaking of helping people by delaying the mandatory payments, the Electricity Department has sent bills of huge amounts.

A local from Manora, Francisco Barbosa informed that the locals of Manora are upset regarding the electricity bills.

“It’s the demand of the poor farmers and marginalised people of Raia to the Electricity Department to bill them for a month or allow payment in instalments,” said Francisco.

Some officials informed Herald that the bills are of two months and are from the period of lockdown.

They also mentioned that the department has received no complaints of high billing amounts. The consumers will have to pay the bills before the due date as there is no order relaxing the last payment date.
