MARGAO: While most of the 30 panchayats in Salcete convened extraordinary gram sabha on June 2, to adopt resolution banning of sale and use of plastic bags in their jurisdiction as directed by the Directorate of Panchayats, there have been a few interesting exceptions.
The Curtorim gram sabha stoutly refused to ban plastic use in the village and put the onus on the government by asking it to first shut down the plastic manufacturing units. Similarly Cavelossim gram sabha also asked the government to ban plastic manufacturing units but did resolve to ban plastic use in the village.
Chandor Cavorim, Guirdolim and Macasana panchayats did not even convene the extraordinary gram sabha as they had resolved to ban plastic use in their villages at earlier gram sabha. While Chandor Cavorim had resolved on July 28, 2018 both Macasana and Guirdolim had adopted it at gram sabhas held on May 26, 2019.
Assolna did not convene the extraordinary gram sabha as their regular gram sabha is scheduled shortly and they will place that issue before the villagers, while Sarzora did not convene the extraordinary gram sabha because the sarpanch is on leave.
Interestingly, as nobody was present for the extraordinary gram sabha at Colva they have postponed it to next Sunday where the issue of the open space in front of the church will also be discussed and Orlim adopted the resolution even though only two villagers were present for the gram sabha.
