MARGAO: All the 33 panchayats going to polls in Salcete taluka have sitting panchayat members contesting the elections scheduled on June 11 and in some places two panchas are contesting against each other.
In panchayats having 7 wards, as many as six sitting panchas are contesting the present elections in Seraulim, Rumdamoll-Davorlim and Guirdolim panchayats, while six of the nine panchas are contesting in Varca.
Of the panchayats having 11 wards, in Raia and Curtorim six panchas are seeking a second term while in Benaulim five of them are contesting again.
While only two of the nine panchas are seeking a second term in Loutolim, Velim and Macasana, three of the 11 in Davorlim-Dicarpale and only one pancha of the seven in Camurlim is seeking another term.
Present sarpanch and deputy sarpanchas from Seraulim, Curtorim, Orlim, Assolna, Carmona, Ambelim, Sarzora and Macasana panchayats are contesting the elections again this time around while deputy sarpanchas of the present Cavelossim, Raia and Loutolim panchayats are seeking a second term as panchas.
Sarpanchas of Varca, Nagoa, Majorda, Verna, Chinchinim, Velim, Paroda, Rachol, San Jose de Areal, Colva and Dramapur Sirlim are contesting the panchayat elections this time around.
While two persons who were sarpanchas in the previous term of the panchayat at Chandor-Cavorim and Aquem Baixo, are seeking another term this time around.
Interestingly as many as 15 persons who served as sarpanchas but had to either step down or were thrown out during the last term in 12 panchayats are contesting the panchayat elections once again. These candidates can be found in the village panchayats of Varca, Navelim, Guirdolim, Camurlim, Chinchinim, Raia, Chandor, San Jose, Loutolim, Colva, Benaulim and Dramapur. The highest number of them is found in Guirdolim panchayat where three are contesting the polls again.
