Salcete PSs booked 3,826 cases under Garbage Act

Highest number of 1,085 cases was booked by Colva Police

MARGAO: Five Salcete police stations in the year 2021 booked a total number of 3,826 cases under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996, which prohibits disposal of garbage in public places, drains and sewage and collected fines from defaulters.

According to the information available from police, out of 3,826 cases booked by Salcete police stations, the highest number of 1,085 cases was booked by Colva Police while 890 were booked by Fatorda Police. 

Police said that Margao Police booked 697 cases while 866 cases were booked by Cuncolim Police and 388 cases were booked by Maina-Curtorim Police.

One senior police officer said that even as the legal system requires that the solid waste be managed properly, and the particular law sets out very clearly the responsibility of every citizen to dispose of the garbage in a proper and lawful manner. 

There has been a considerable rise in the cases booked by Salcete police in the year 2021.

He said that the Salcete Taluka, which consists of five police stations have booked 1,805 cases in the first six months of the year 2021 under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1996 that prohibits disposal of garbage in public places, drains and sewage and fines of Rs 1, 80,500 were collected. However, by the end of the year, the cases increased to 3,826.

Out of 1,805 cases booked in the first six months of the year 2021, the Margao Police booked 334 cases and collected a fine of Rs 33,400 while Maina-Curtorim Police booked 363 and collected Rs 36,300 as a fine.

Colva Police booked 211 and collected Rs 21,100 while Cuncolim Police booked 515 cases and collected Rs 51,500 and Fatorda Police booked 382 cases and collected Rs 38,200.
