Salcete school mgmt failed to punish molester teacher despite eight complaints against him

Prior to shocking molestation incident, in a startling revelation, eight other parents had filed complaints with the school management against Ramesh Gaonkar; parents want the PE teacher’s services terminated; it has also come to light that the Education Dept failed to initiate action against the accused, who has been involved in molestation cases in the past in other schools

MARGAO:  It has come to light that prior to the shocking molestation incident reported in a government high school in Salcete eight other parents had filed complaints with the school management against the physical education (PE) teacher Ramesh Gaonkar, a resident of Paddi. On Thursday, tension rent the air, as the parents marched to government high school demanding that the services of the teacher be terminated. 

In yet another startling revelation it has also come to light that the accused teacher has been involved in molestation cases in the past during his postings in other schools, but the Education Department failed to initiate  strict action against him till the school headmistress filed a complaint with the Cuncolim Police. 

On receiving the news, several parents and villagers on Thursday gathered at the government high school and expressed concern over their children’s safety in the school. 

Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar, besides Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa, local panch Jennifer Fernandes, besides Bailancho Ekvott president Auda Viegas, panchayat and police officials also rushed to the site. 

Later, at a meeting held in the school premises, it was revealed that nearly eight other parents had filed written complaints with the school management in the past, which were later forwarded to the Education Department for further action. 

Parents and villagers sought to know the case status. 

Speaking to media persons, local panch Jennifer Fernandes said that the school management has informed them that few other parents too had filed complaints against the accused teacher pertaining to sexual assault on their children. 

“We don’t want to spoil the future of our children studying in the school and our demand is to terminate the services of the accused,” she demanded.

Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said that the accused teacher is not fit to be in the educational field. 

“Such incidents should not be repeated. We will stand behind the victims’ parents till they get justice,” he stated. 

Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar informed that he has requested the parents and villagers not to take law into their hands. 

“Villagers have demanded that the services of the accused be terminated. I have instructed the police to make a strong case against the teacher to ensure justice is given to the victim,” he said. 

The villagers expressed shock after receiving information that more parents coming out and disclosing the incidents of alleged sexual assault on their children by the accused teacher.

Accused remanded in eight days police custody
MARGAO: The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs on Thursday suspended 45-year-old Ramesh Gaonkar, who has been arrested for allegedly molesting a minor student in a government high school in Salcete.
Sports Minister Govind Gaude confirmed that the Physical Education teacher, a resident of Paddi, has been placed under suspension. 
Gaude said, “I signed the order suspending Ramesh Gaonkar on Thursday evening. He was attached to the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.” He said, there are as many as 163 PE teachers appointed by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and posted in government high schools across the State.
According to sources, Gaonkar, who is in the custody of Cuncolim Police, will be served the suspension order on Friday by an officer. Based on the report submitted by the headmistress to the State government, the accused has been placed under suspension.
Cuncolim PI Tukaram Chavan, who investigated the case, said that Ramesh was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Quepem on Thursday afternoon, which remanded him to eight days in police custody.
The police officer said the accused underwent medical examination and his statement has been recorded. The Cuncolim Police team headed by PI Chavan, Lady PSI Kavita Rawat and PSI Narayan Padker visited the school on Thursday morning in connection with the investigation. Police recorded the statements of seven students, who stated that the PE teacher was involved in sexually explicit acts in the school.
Police investigations revealed that Gaonkar during his posting in Molcornem two years ago was transferred to Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Panjim, following a school inquiry based on a similar complaint.
In this regard, Cuncolim Police said that they contacted their Quepem counterparts to ascertain if any case was registered against him then. However, they later found that no complaint was filed against Gaonkar. Police said that after two years he was transferred from Panjim to his current posting at Fatorpa three months ago.
The police disclosed that the accused has been in service for only eight years and that his past records are not satisfactory. Police said that the accused is married and has two children. The police said further investigations were on.
