MARGAO: Villagers from Salcete held a candlelight unity walk to commemorate the birth centenary of Dr Jack de Sequeira and to condemn the attacks on the Christian community.
Hundreds of villagers from Cuncolim, Chinchinim, Velim, Cavelossim and Assolna converged at the Assolna church ground, demanding that Dr Sequeira be given due recognition for preserving Goa’s identity.
Fr Victor Ferrao, professor at Rachol Seminary, in his address demanded that Dr Sequeira be honoured by bestowing upon him the status of ‘Father of Goa’s Opinion Poll.’ He said, “We need to take inspiration from Jack de Sequeira to preserve Goan identity.”
He also called for introspection to reverse the “alarming” trend of Goans surrendering their Indian passports to leave Goa’s shores.
He called on Goans who have plans to move to Europe on Portuguese passports to think about the implications of such moves and what it means for Goa and Goans.
