CURTORIM: Cases of murder, attempt to murder and hurt are slowly raising its head in Salcete villages. This year till 25 June 4 murders were reported in Salcete of which 3 have been detected while during same period 2 cases of attempt to murder were reported.
Salcete taluka has five police stations namely Margao, Maina Curtorim, Colva, Cuncolim and Fatorda covering 66 villages. According to the information available, out of 4 murders Margao, Cuncolim and Colva police stations have registered one case each and the cases have been detected. Whereas the case registered at Maina Curtorim police has remained undetected.
As compared to this 2 cases of attempt to murder were reported in Salcete villages of which till 25 June both have been detected. One is registered by Maina Curtorim police and second by Margao police. In Margao, a middle aged woman was attempted to murder by the accused person.
As compared to this year from January to May 2022, a total of 13 cases of hurt were registered by various police stations in Salcete and 12 were detected. Out of these 13 cases registered by five police stations, a maximum number of 6 were registered by Maina Curtorim police station and all were detected while 4 were registered by Colva police and 3 have been detected. 3 cases of hurt were registered by Margao police and all were detected.
It is pertinent to note that in the year 2021 in villages of Salcete 7 murders were registered by five police stations of which 6 were detected. Out of these 7 murders 2 were registered by Margao police and both were detected. 2 were registered by Colva police and 1 was detected, while 1 each murder was reported in Maina Curtorim police station, Cuncolim and Fatorda and they were detected.
As compare to this in the year 2021 in all 8 attempt to commit murder were reported in Salcete and 8 were solved. Out of these 8 attempts to murder registered by Salcete police stations, 3 were registered by Margao police and detected , 2 each were registered by Colva and Fatorda police and were detected. 1 case of attempt to murder was registered by Cuncolim police and same was detected. No case of attempt to murder was registered by Maina Curtorim police.
In the year 2021 maximum number of 36 cases of hurt were registered by Salcete police station of which 35 were detected. Out of these 36 cases of hurt maximum number of 10 cases each were registered by Margao police and Maina Curtorim police station and solved. 8 were registered by Cuncolim police, 6 by Colva police and detected. 2 were registered by Fatorda police and 1 was detected then.
A massive influx of migrants has contributed to a number of cases related to crimes in Salcete and it has become a concern for the resident population and the Salcete administration.
Cases of theft, burglary, sex trade, drug abuse, kidnapping, rape, etc involving migrant workers have been reported from Margao and its surrounding villages in Salcete.
Investigation has revealed that the organised criminal behaviour of migrants, illicit trafficking and trade have added to the problems.
While police claim that verification of tenants, maids and house helps by sending their details to the head office in Margao has helped to a large extent in detecting cases.
