SALIGAO: Five panchas of Saligao panchayat have moved a no-confidence motion against Sarpanch Lafira Gomes by submitting a letter to the Block Development Office (BDO).
The motion has been moved as the Sarpanch has allegedly not been taking the members into confidence before taking any decision regarding development, encouraging illegal construction and misusing her power.
The BDO will convene a special meeting in the panchayat office to discuss the notice of no-confidence against the sarpanch.
The signatories to the no-confidence motion are Deputy Sarpanch Pandurang Harmalkar, Panchas Kalpana Oraskar, Shradha Borkar, Deepak Rane and Dayanand Mandrekar.
Two months ago, angry locals had gathered near the Saligao panchayat and protested the illegal constructions mushrooming in the fields in Morlem Bhat of Saligao. They had also warned that if these structures were not demolished then they would be compelled to take law into their hands.
One of the panchas pointed out that they were fed up with the way things were functioning at the panchayat. “The fields meant for agriculture are being used to build commercial and residential structures. Several houses have been constructed in the fields recently,” he said.
Eight months ago, Herald had reported that at least 76 illegal structures were constructed on Saligao comunidade land which has now gone up to 81. The filling of paddy fields for construction and commercial activities is being carried out rampantly in the area.
