Sanguem child rapist jailed for sexually assaulting six-yr-old girl

43-yr-old accused convicted, sentenced to 63 months simple imprisonment; ordered to pay fine of Rs one lakh or in default to undergo three months simple imprisonment

PANJIM: The Goa Children’s Court, Panjim sentenced Ahmed Ijaz alias Ijaz, 42 from Sanguem to undergo five years imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs two lakh or in default to undergo simple imprisonment for sexually abusing and assaulting a six-year-old girl.

The incident had occurred on June 17, 2018 when the accused criminally trespassed into the victim’s house and sexually assaulted her. Following a complaint by the victim’s mother, the Sanguem police arrested the accused and later chargesheeted him.

Goa Children’s Court President Judge Sayonora Telles Laad framed charges against the accused for the offences punishable under Section 448 of IPC, Section 2 (Y) (ii) punishable under Section 8 (2) of Goa Children’s Act and Section 9 (M) punishable under Section 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012.

The prosecution examined in all 12 witnesses to prove the charges and held the accused guilty.

The Judge Sayonora Telles Laad convicted Ijaz and sentenced him to undergo one year simple imprisonment under Section 448 of IPC, to undergo three years simple imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs one lakh or in default to undergo three months simple imprisonment under Section 8 Of Goa Children’s Act and to undergo 63 months simple imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs one lakh or in default to undergo three months simple imprisonment. 

All the sentences will run concurrently, the Court said. Adv Melwyn Viegas argued on behalf of the accused under Free legal Aid Scheme while, public prosecutor Francisca Noronha represented the State.
