SANGUEM: Ward No 9 Councillor Sweta Supraj Naik Tari was on Monday elected chairperson of the Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) and three-time councillor Queiroz Cruz as vice-chairperson.
Affiliated to the BJP, both the candidates were supported by former MLA Subhash Phaldessai during their poll campaign.
In the elections held on Monday, Sweta defeated Fouziya Shaikh by 6-4 votes while, Queiroz defeated Messiah Saude da Costa by an identical margin.
Congratulating the new chairperson and vice chairperson, former MLA Phaldessai assured full co-operation in getting the desired support from the Government in carrying out the development works of the council.
Urging the other four councillors to work in unison with the ruling group, he called upon them to keep aside their political differences for the overall development of the council.
Santiksha Gadekar, Pritee Naik, Archana Gaonkar, Sayyed Ikbal, Queiroz Cruz and Sweta Supraj Naik Tari voted in favour of the chairperson and vice chairperson.
