SANGUEM: Sanguem Municipal Council member Messiah ‘Meshu’ D’Costa has threatened to agitate if the Council does not stop the dumping of dry and vegetable waste in the open area adjacent to the newly opened Tribal Welfare Centre and behind the Catholic Cemetery at Sanguem.
D’Costa expressed concern over the reckless dumping in the area, despite the municipality having vast open space for waste disposal at Gunjimol in the town, where the municipality had proposed the construction of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) plant.Due to the haphazard dumping of waste, visitors to the Tribal Welfare Centre and those working there have to endure the foul smell and the swarms of flies throughout the day. The same situation affects those visiting the Catholic cemetery for funerals, D’Costa said.
When contacted, Vice Chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council Queiroz Cruz stated that the waste dumped near the Tribal Welfare Centre is regularly covered with soil. He added that the area around the dump site is low-lying and needs to be filled to reach ground level.
Cruz also mentioned that efforts by the Council to construct an MRF at Gunjimol are currently on hold due to opposition from some locals regarding the shed’s location.
