"This disposal site is also only a few metres away from the municipal-owned rest house,” said D’Costa.

SANGUEM: Subject to the foul odours emanating from rotting animal carcasses dumped at a site next to the Cemetery in Sanguem’s Khairikanttem area, locals have urged officials from the Sanguem Municipal Council to find an alternative means of disposing of animal waste.

Councillor Meshu D’Costa from ward 2 of Sanguem said that people attending funeral masses and those living in the vicinity of the Cemetery were exposed to the stench, as well as related health risks, especially since the municipality-owned plot being used as a dumping ground is also next to a water tank.

“Ever since the waste segregation plant at Kharkhatiaghati stopped accepting carcasses, the municipality has been dumping or burying animal carcasses and other waste at the municipal-owned land near the Cemetery, which is also close to the water tank from where drinking water is supplied to the people of Sanguem. This disposal site is also only a few metres away from the municipal-owned rest house,” said D’Costa.

The Sanguem Municipality has been facing grave difficulties in the disposal of certain types of organic waste, as the waste segregation plant at Kharkhatiaghati does not accept animal carcasses and other waste like branches and leaves of trees.
