Sanguem: Given the increasing number of crimes in the State, the citizens from Sanguem have called for immediate replacement and maintenance work of the CCTV cameras, which had been installed at prominent places in Sanguem by the Government some ten years back.
“Making CCTV functional is a must and needs to be done on an urgent basis,” said a local Ravindra Naik, whose views were similar to that of many in the village.

The CCTVs were installed in Sanguem ten years back under the MPLAD Scheme at the instance of then South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, who incidentally is also the present MP. However, at the end of Sardinha’s earlier team, the authorities failed to look after the CCTV, which ceased to function even though it was aiding various government departments including the Police and RTO.
For instance, the number of traffic violations had increased at that point of time.
With the latest incident in Margao where a jeweller lost his life following a day light burglary attempt of his store, the business community in particular have called on the government to urgently restore the CCTV surveillance system. They point out that some shops have their own CCTV cameras but in case of any burglary or breakdown of law and order, footage from the government CCTVs would help collect evidence that would be crucial in nabbing the criminals.
