SANGUEM: Citizens from Sanguem have given the authorities a six-day deadline to repair the 1.6 km stretch of road from Dando Junction to Sanguem police station which, due to damage and potholes, has become accident prone. Triggered by a two-wheeler accident which left two youth badly injured late Tuesday evening, a group of citizens from Sanguem led by Councillor Meshu D’Costa gathered at the dilapidated portion of the road and demanded that it be repaired immediately.
Despite assurances from PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral that potholes all over the state would be filled on a war footing, the people from Sanguem have not witnessed the Jet Patcher machine at work in their villages yet.
A big part of the road from Dando to the Sanguem Police Station has dug up two years ago, to lay a drinking water pipeline.
However as the authorities failed to repair the road for several months after laying the pipeline, local residents led several agitations and even resorted to blocking the road. It was only then, that the damaged portion was concretised during the last monsoon.
However, the part that was concretised has now sloughed off, and potholes can be seen all along the road, which forces two-wheeler riders to swerve to avoid the damaged parts and drive on the wrong side of the road, ultimately leading to accidents. The councillor, speaking on behalf of the citizens gathered, said they would agitate again if the road is not repaired within the next six days.
