SANGUEM: In an apt decision, the Sanguem Municipal Council led by Chairperson Romualdo Fernandes finally shifted the fruit, vegetable, fish and meat traders from the congested old town hall premises to an open space behind the Office of the Deputy Collector at Sanguem.
The fish and local fruit and vegetable vendors were shifted to the space surrounding the old town hall some six years back as the municipality was in the process of constructing a new building premise in place of the old municipal market building which also housed the local vegetables, fish and meat vendors.
The place where the fish and local fruit and vegetable vendors were shifted was literally dangerous as it was by the side of the main road and people used to park their vehicles on the main road and proceed to make their purchases. Ever since being elected as Chairperson of SMC, Fernandes has brought in several amends in the town area including that of inaugurating the long-pending Administrative Complex and giving a new lease of life to the municipal garden.
The present action of shifting the fruit, vegetable and meat vendors is highly applauded not only by the people in Sanguem but also by the traders.
While the mutton, chicken and other meat traders are shifted into a ney constructed shed with the desired amenities, the fruit and vegetable vendors are shifted into the ‘sopo’ type market complex which was constructed long back but could not be occupied.
The fruit and vegetable vendors have however shown some concern over the height of the platforms (‘sopo)’ as it is on a higher side and becomes difficult for the female members to climb on it.
The municipal authorities have however looked into the suggestion put forth by the vendors and work on suitable solution into the matter.
Meanwhile immediately after being shifted to the new place, Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar, SMC Chief Officer Angelo Fernandez, Chairperson Romualdo Fernandes, Councillor Sanjay Raikar and others visited the new market area and expressed satisfaction on the matter.
