Sanguem river polluted with chicken waste

SANGUEM: Dumping on chicken waste has polluted the river in Sanguem at Cotto and Bazarwaddo complained Sanguem Councillor Messiah D’Costa alias Meshu.

“Despite assuring me to take action against this menace when I raised it up at the council meeting, no action has been taken as yet by the Sanguem Municipal Counil,” said Meshu.

He pointed out that waste of slaughtered chicken can be seen in the river as feathers and legs are floating freely.

He disclosed that the council had proposed composting this waste by dumping it in pit that would be covered with soil which he lamented has not been done as yet.

“Many locals bathe in this river its water is used for domestic chores like washing clothes and utensils specially by those working at the shops in the market,” he pointed out.

Chicken vendors in the market reportedly dump their waste in the river as the Council does not collect it apparently because the water treatment plant does not accept chicken feathers and legs.

“The only solution to this problem is to bury this waste in a pit and cover it with mud, which the council had promised to do but has not done as yet,” said Meshu.

Locals say that due to the dumping of chicken waste in the river, there are crocodiles seen in it now which could be dangerous for people bathing in the river.
