Sanguem road-users demand safety rails for bridge after fatal accident

SANGUEM: Following a tragic incident where a man lost his life after falling off the Zamgall Bridge, locals from Rivona and nearby villages are demanding the installation of side railings on the bridge to enhance safety.

On December 20, a fatal accident occurred when 50-year-old Ramakant, also known as Ramdas Gaonkar, collided with the side wall of the bridge while riding his two-wheeler. The impact threw him into the river, and he drowned. The absence of side railings has made crossing the bridge perilous, especially for two-wheeler riders.

Locals emphasised the urgent need for side railings, citing concerns about the dangers faced by commuters, particularly in the absence of adequate lighting on the bridge during the night.

The incident has revived memories of a similar tragedy a few months ago when three family members, including a minor, drowned in a river due to the lack of side railings on the Taripanto bridge in Sanguem.

Despite previous assurances from authorities to install side railings on bridges, the necessary safety measures have not been implemented. PWD officials informed concerned villagers that estimates for the installation of side railings have been submitted, and they are awaiting the sanction order.
