Sanitation crisis in Morjim as businesses, households discharge untreated wastewater into gutters

Sarpanch to urge Health Department and Goa State Pollution Control Board to act against those responsible for the mess

PERNEM: Morjim is battling waste water issues as various business establishments as well as local households are releasing their waste water in nearby gutters.

Morjim sarpanch Mukesh Gadekar said that he will be making an appeal to the Health Department and Goa State Pollution Control Board to take action against those responsible for this mess.

“Hotel owners at Madhlawada, Morjim, are releasing their untreated sewage water into the gutters. This has led to a nauseating stink in the area. The Health Department should have taken note of this as it poses direct health risk to the public,” said Gadekar.

“We have complained regarding this issue several times but the authorities have paid no heed to our requests,” said Dabholkar, a local.

Morjim boasts of a large number of natural water resources which join the Chapora river. However, these natural water bodies are slowly turning into gutters thanks to irresponsible behaviour of businessmen and locals alike.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar had announced a wastewater treatment plant for the constituency and had stated that the project would be constructed within next six months if the government is able to acquire land for the purpose.
