PANJIM: Corporation of the City of Panaji Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues on Tuesday informed corporators that it will take at least a fortnight before the Corporation to begins signing lease agreements with the legal occupants of the Panjim municipal market.
Addressing the ordinary meeting of CCP, Rodrigues said that the draft lease agreement for market shops has already been approved and this needs to be informed to Directorate of Municipal Administration. “The process is on…it will take al teast 15 days to begin signing of lease agreement with the (legal) occupants,” he said. The issue was raised by Councilor Rudresh Chodankar who sought to know the status of the signing of lease agreement.
The lease agreements will be signed for three years with rent charges of Rs 256 per sq m as approved by PWD. CCP Commissioner had in the past submitted a report as regards the status of the occupancy of the city market shops, observing that 95 per cent of the shop occupants were occupying the place illegally.
The meeting resolved to appeal in the Supreme Court challenging High Court order in a case related to one M/s Vernekar Diesel, which illegally sublet its shop in the municipal building to one Tahir Isani. CCP has sealed the shop, which was challenged in the lower court and High Court by Isani.
“Both the orders went against CCP and now it has been decided to approach the Supreme Court,” Rodrigues said. The corporators resolved to appoint Advocate Amit Sharma for appearing on behalf of CCP in the Apex Court. The issue was hotly debated with ruling and opposition blaming each other for losing the case in the lower and High Courts.
