In a strategic move to revitalize operations and generate additional revenue, the Sanjivani Sugar Factory, which had suspended its activities since the year 2019-20, has embarked on a series of initiatives. Following successful ventures into vegetable and fruit production, the factory administration has now launched a fish farming unit in collaboration with the Fisheries Department.
The fish farming activities are set in motion, utilizing abandoned pits that were dug around two decades ago. The initiative was inaugurated by officials from the Fisheries Department and Satej Kamat, the Administrator of Sanjivani Sugar Factory. Approximately 1500 fish seeds, including varieties such as rau, Catla, and common calf, were introduced into the fish rearing pits, according to fishery department officials. The fish are expected to reach a weight of around 1.5 kg after a six-month growth period.
Administrator Satej Kamat expressed optimism about the positive impact of fish farming on revenue generation. He highlighted the significant progress made in revenue generation, citing an increase from Rs six thousand per month in 2022 to around three lakh per month at the end of 2023. Kamat emphasized that the introduction of fish farming would contribute to a consistent revenue stream.
The fish farming initiative is part of a larger plan to enhance revenue, with the goal of achieving Rs five lakh per month from a combination of vegetable, fruit, and fish farming. Kamat outlined the development of 24 plots specifically dedicated to vegetable farming, with eight teams of contract workers receiving incentives for their contributions. The vegetables produced are made available to the public through the Sanjivani Sugar Factory outlet, where a bag of vegetables is priced at Rs 100. The same outlet will soon feature fresh fish from the newly initiated fish farming unit.
This multi-pronged approach not only aims to revitalize the Sanjivani Sugar Factory’s operations but also underscores its commitment to contributing to the local community by providing fresh, locally sourced produce. As the fish farming venture takes off, the factory looks forward to further strengthening its ties with the residents of Ponda and the surrounding areas.
