QUEPEM: In the recent Gram Sabha meet of the Sanvordem village panchayat, contentious discussions were held on various local issues. The main topic of discussion was a proposal to ban ten-tyre heavy vehicles from entering the panchayat area. Other issues discussed included the Sanvordem fish market and garbage disposal in the village.
The atmosphere heated up when the proposal to ban coal laden ten-tyre heavy vehicles and container trucks from factories from plying the narrow village roads was put forward. Sanvordem villagers unanimously approved the resolution.
Sarpanch Chinmayi Naik explained that the main reason behind the ban is that village roads are narrow, causing traffic congestion and increasing the possibility of accidents. She said she would write to the factories engaging these trucks and inform them of the decision.
Regarding the issue of the Sanvordem fish market, Sarpanch Naik acknowledged that it encroaches on the Public Works Department site, where fish vendors sit. “At the same time, we also need to think about the livelihood of the fish vendors. This issue should be solved, but we need to consider their difficulties,” said Naik.
Sarpanch Naik further stated that Sanvordem panchayat is looking for a new location for the fish market and will try to shift it to a permanent place as soon as possible.
