SANGUEM: Locals from Sanvordem and nearby villages have urged the railway authorities and contractor associated with the construction of railway overbridge at Sanvordem to immediately clear the mud dumped into the river within next few days.

The villagers said that due to the dumping of mud the villages had witnessed flood-like situation in the last monsoon. They complained of losses suffered in the last monsoon as the river water had entered into their houses and plantations.

The villagers fear similar situation may crop up this monsoon also as the railway contractor is yet to remove the mud which is dumped into the river.

Panchayat member Sanjay Naik, who is also a committee member of Southern Railway Board, said, “It is true there was flood-like situation in the area during the last monsoon season and the villagers had attributed the same to the mud dumped by the contractor into the river.”

Naik informed that this year there are fears of similar situation cropping up in the village if the contractor fails to remove the mud.

While assuring to take up the matter before the Railways Board at the next meet, Naik said, “The contractor is very slow in undertaking the construction work of bridge and the same cannot be accepted.”

Similar views were also expressed by social worker Suhas Naik.

He said that the contractor should be held responsible for the losses incurred to the villagers due to flooding in the area.
