MARGAO: The scrap yards located at Sao Jose De Areal, at the Nessai Industrial Estate and even those outside have come under the scanner of the Health Department as the locals have raised concerns about a possible repeat of a dengue outbreak in the village.

Directions have been issued to remove such type of materials before the monsoon sets in and it was also emphasised that the health department should be informed immediately if any worker at the industrial estate gets fever instead of the norm of asking the said worker not to show up and stay at the place they are residing.

While the Curtorim Primary Health Centre (PHC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) have inspected the area, it has been found that a lot of scrap materials is spilling into the roads and that these scrap yards have become a source for breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The locals are the ones who raised this issue and alerted the authorities, including the local MLA, as they did not want a repeat of what had happened in the past. The authorities were also urged to conduct a survey of all such scrap yards that are operating both at the industrial estate and also in private properties nearby and that action be initiated against those found violating the law. Locals feared that these scrap yards are posing a risk to the public and that besides being a potential source for vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, the scrap yards are a health hazard and could lead to other infections being spread in the village.

The health department stated that they have a plan of action in place to curb the spread of dengue and drives are being conducted every week in sensitive areas not just in Sao Jose De Areal but across the State.
