MARGAO: The residents of Sao Jose De Areal halted overloaded garbage trucks belonging to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and issued a stern warning of further agitation if the civic body persists in such practices. The villagers demanded that the MMC refrain from transporting waste in an improper manner, causing a nuisance in the locality.
The MMC has been transporting dry waste for segregation from Margao to Nessai, to a shed owned by the municipality. However, villagers claim that the garbage trucks are frequently overloaded, resulting in waste bags falling onto the road. This has prompted the villagers to raise their voices on multiple occasions, warning the MMC about the issue. On Thursday, villagers took matters into their own hands by stopping the overloaded vehicle and compelling the MMC to remove the excess waste before proceeding. A concerned junior engineer and supervisor from the civic body arrived at the scene, where they faced the ire of frustrated Sao Jose De Areal residents.
Fredy Travasso, speaking to reporters, warned the MMC to cease transporting waste in a hazardous manner that creates a nuisance in their village. “We will not allow the MMC trucks to carry waste by loading above the body level or they should cover the waste with a tarpaulin. We will not tolerate this nuisance by the civic body,” he stated.
