Saptah fair stalls continue to operate as MMC turns a Nelson’s eye

VASCO: After a seven-day closure for Vasco Saptah celebrations, Swatantra Path was finally reopened on Tuesday. However, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) faced criticism for its failure to promptly dismantle the temporary shops that had sprung up during the fair. Shop owners extended their presence for an additional two days, raising questions about the MMC’s lack of action. Local residents voiced frustration over the MMC’s perceived negligence, attributing it to potential revenue losses.

During the Vasco Saptah, which commenced on August 22nd, fair stalls occupied space on Swatantra Path and St Vaz Road for a week, leading to road closures. The MMC had assured that the shops would be removed promptly after the conclusion of the festival. These road closures caused inconveniences for residents, prompting the MMC’s intention to address the situation swiftly after the event’s conclusion.

The MMC had organized squads to supervise and guide shopkeepers in dismantling their temporary structures. However, on Tuesday, none of these squads were seen doing their duty throughout the day, and only stalls near the divider were taken down. The civic body had even provided a vehicle for workers to transport seized goods. The apparent laxity in enforcement raised eyebrows, with residents questioning the municipality’s claims of financial constraints while seemingly neglecting revenue recovery that rightfully belongs to them.

As the MMC’s actions come under scrutiny, the delayed removal of fair stalls on Swatantra Path has sparked an outcry, highlighting the need for transparent and efficient management of such post-event activities.
