Seed balls are made by wrapping seeds in mud. Once dry, they are tossed into any open space. When nourished by rains, the seeds may germinate and grow into a tree. Started by Masanobu Fukuoka, the Japanese man famous for popularising natural farming, the concept has been adopted worldwide. Minister for Forest, Vijai Sardesai, said that he would be holding another meeting of forest department officers to discuss the proposals like seed bombing. “We can also use drones or take assistance from the trekkers to sprinkle seeds in the forest areas. These seeds are thrown in forest areas where normally humans don’t reach, so that they germinate adding to the greenery in the wild,” he said. At his first review meeting, Sardesai, said he is also looking at including the assistance of Indian Navy’s choppers to sprinkle the seed bombs in the forest areas where humans can’t reach. The Forest Department may consider using a drone for the same as well.
