MARGAO: South Goa Member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday urged the government to withdraw the cases filed against the four persons who had participated in the famous Chandor protests that took place in November 2020, stating that the protestors had not done anything for personal gains.
Addressing the media at Margao he also appealed to the legislators of Goa Assembly to discuss and pass a resolution pertaining to the harmful effects of the extended jurisdiction of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), and send it to the Union government.
“Whatever, the protesters at Chandor were in the interest of the State, and not for their personal gains. Don’t close your (government) eyes and thou in power don’t show that you have no heart. Withdraw the cases, as people have suffered enough,” said Sardinha.
The MP said that he is totally against the extended jurisdiction of the MPA.
“More powers have been given to the MPA, and I have no issue with that, but my opposition is to the increase of jurisdiction of the ports. The beaches and the seashore are now coming under the MPA, for which I am totally against. People of Goa are against this,” said Sardinha.
He further said MPA is taking away the powers of the local bodies, and hence he urged the State government to discuss the issue in the Assembly and take resolution.
“We can have an all party meeting with the Prime Minister or the concerned Union Minister in these regards. There is no need to create unnecessary conflicts between the people and the MPA,” said Sardinha.
