MARGAO: Sarpanchas and Deputy Sarpanchas were sworn in to 27 of the 30 panchayats in Salcete in a very low key manner. Only the newly elected panchayat members were present in the panchayats with hardly any villagers coming to witness the proceedings.
Curtorim was the only panchayat where around half a dozen villagers including a defeated candidate were standing outside the panchayat office while the swearing in was going on inside.
At Dramapur Sirlim the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch were elected by draw of lots as there was a tie because one person was elected unopposed from two wards and so the number of panchas was reduced to six. It was sweet revenge for Olasrico Rodrigues who was elected deputy sarpanch as he was ousted as sarpanch by a no confidence motion during the last term.
In neighbouring Chinchinim Deusua although the panel elected swears allegiance to MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues, there was cross voting as one pancha switched sides. While Flory Pereira was elected sarpamch with seven votes in her favour former sarpanch Valentino Barreto was elected deputy sarpanch with only six votes in his favour.
At Telaulim both the panchas elected unopposed were elected as Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch. While Estevan Goes who has been elected to the panchayat for a fifth term was elected sarpanch, Adv Rima Dias was elected the deputy sarpanch.
It is all women’s power at Sarzora as both the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch elected are women.
At Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao’s panel was elected unopposed as the four opposition panchas in the 11 member panchayat abstained from the meeting today. Incidentally, the ruling panels at Varca and Carmona asserted that they are independent and not affiliated to the MLA.
Former chief minister Luizinho Faleiro lost control over three panchayats in his constituency. At Navelim panchayat the panel floated by Edwin alias Cipru Cardoso who was an independent candidate at the last assembly elections, took control. The panel owing allegiance to former minister Avertano Furtado took over the reins of Davorlim Dicarpale panchayat.
Avertano Furtado also wrested control over Aquem Baixo panchayat as his supporter Siddesh was elected sarpanch. Of the nine panchas elected, three panchas supporting each of the politicians namely MLA Luizinho Faleiro, Avertano Furtado and Satyavijai Naik were elected. Avertano reportedly split one pancha from Satyavijai Naik’s panel and Agnelo Dias who was Luizinho Faleiro’s supporter also backed his panel to give him control over the panchayat.
In Macasana former sarpanch Agnelo was elected as the sarpanch while Feliciana whose husband Caetano is also elected as pancha member was elected the deputy sarpanch. In Guirdolim Malisha Carvalho was elected the sarpanch as MLA Clafasio Dias had promised that a ST lady would be the sarpanch. She being on 23 years old also went in her favour.
In Paroda although the outgoing sarpanch Deepak Kharangate won with a comfortable margin, former panchayat member Inacio Tereza was elected sarpamch with Roopali Gaonkar as the deputy.
In Curtorim Rupesh Naik who won by the highest margin of 655 votes as panchayat member in Salcete was elected sarpanch. However, Rue Menezes who contested against him for sarpanch was happy that he proved MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco wrong by polling 5 votes thus proving Reginaldo’s claim of having nine panchas with him wrong.
In Raia the panel floated by former ZP member Domnic Gaonkar whose wife Fatima is the present ZP member was ousted and independent panchas came together to take control of this panchayat.
At Ambelim outgoing panch Denica Correia who defeated the outgoing deputy sarpanch Tyron Fernandes was elected sarpanch.
