VASCO: BJP-backed candidate Sanjay Satardekar won the bye-elections to Ward 5 of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) by a margin of 301 votes.
The counting of votes was taken up at the Deputy Collector’s office, Vasco, on Monday morning. In all, four candidates were in the fray. However, Amar Phadte withdrew from the fray at the last minute in favour of Sanjay Mandrekar.
Satardekar polled 986 votes, while Mandrekar, who had filed a case against earlier councillor Rajesh Redkar for holding office of profit and had got him disqualified, polled 685 votes, thus losing once again, this time by 301 votes.
Though Redkar had claimed to have had the support of some councillors and Murgao Action and Vikas Samithi Convenor Sankalp Amonkar, he failed to garner support of the ward residents.
Incidentally, though Mandrekar is a resident of Ward 5, the electorate of the ward preferred Satardekar, who is the resident of Ward 6 and is residing at Chicalim.
