PANJIM, APRIL 15
Kadamba Transport Corporation’s (KTC) new buses will now have a Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, which will help the control rooms track the bus wherever they are.
“GPS, a vehicle tracking system at the initial stage will be mostly adopted for government-run public transport vehicles, that is, KTC,” Director of Transport Venencio Furtado told Herald.
Furtado confirmed that as per Central government directives, GPS will be installed in all States including Goa.
KTCL will be soon inducting 20 buses in its fleet through Jawaharlala Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and on trial basis GPS will be fitted in all these buses.
“Once it gives positive results, the same will be inducted in other KTC and private buses,” the director said.
He informed that the GPS in buses are primarily installed to track the location of buses, over speeding, late arrival, late departures and bunching of buses at any given time for administrative purpose.
“It will be of great help especially to passengers to find exact timings of the buses and will be more useful to address grievances of passengers who lose their belongings,” Furtado explained.
“There are times when people hand over their belongings to co-passengers who are seated and forget to collect them while getting down and as such they ring us up. Even we receive several complaints of buses being late at spot,” he added.
The new 20 buses of KTCL will be blue in colour with low floor having additional 10 seats (31-seater) and will provide shuttle services. The low floor buses will facilitate the aged people and partially disabled to board them without any hassle. These buses will have special seating arrangements for students.
Under JNNURM Rs 7.7 crore were assured by the Central government of which Rs 3.50 crore were utilised for procuring 30 buses while remaining Rs 1.50
