OLD GOA: Raising concerns of contamination of Carambolim Lake, the Corlim Citizens Civic and Consumer Forum has demanded that concerned authorities like the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) take strict action against households letting out the sewage water through the drains, which then finds its way into the lake.
The forum’s secretary Baptist Pereira showed Herald how sewage and probably septic waste is let out by households through the public drains, at Corlim.
“This waste water finds its way to the nearby Carambolim lake, which is causing pollution,” Pereira said while also showing heaps of hair dumped by barbers and also garbage dumped in the area.
“During the monsoon, the hair and garbage will ultimately end up in the Carambolim Lake,” Pereira said and demanded that the GSPCB act against the perpetrators so that the lake is saved from destruction.
Showing a letter to the GSPCB dated January 8 this year, Pereira said that the Board’s authorities did inspect the site and collect water samples. “After that I have not heard anything from them nor has any action been taken and things are going on as usual,” he said.
“Conservation and protection of Carambolim Lake is needed as in the near future there may be scarcity of water, and hence it is to be protected from getting polluted,” Pereira said. He stressed that the lake is a famous bird-watching spot in Goa with many species of migratory birds visiting the lake.
