PANJIM: A delegation of the ‘Save Mhadei-Save Goa’ movement on Wednesday called on the Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai and sought his intervention to impress upon the State government to challenge before the Supreme Court the Centre’s approval to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted by the Karnataka government for its Kalsa-Bhandura irrigation project.
The front through Goa Governor has petitioned President of India Droupadi Murmu the copy of the resolution passed by the people of Goa on January 16, during a public meeting held at Sanquelim, demanding not to allow Karnataka to initiate the project of Mhadei river diversion on the ecological and wildlife parameters.
Addressing media persons after the meeting, the campaign’s convenor Prajal Sakhardande said the delegation pointed out to the Governor how Goa government is yet to challenge the Central Water Commission (CWC) approval to DPR before the Supreme Court, who is seized of the inter-state river diversion matter.
“We have requested Governor, as head of the State, he should intervene and impress upon the State government to challenge the DPR. Governor has assured us to do whatever he can as per his constitutional power,” he said.
Sakhardande said that the delegation explained to the Governor how Goa will suffer if the Mhadei river water is diverted.
“Mhadei is our lifeline and it was important to acquaint the Governor about the issue. We have requested him to bring forth a solution in favour of Goa,” he said.
CWC in December, last year, granted its consent to DPR submitted by Karnataka for its Kalasa-Bhandura project.
