Save Old Goa Committee Fights Against 5-Star Hotel Project, Demands Buffer Zone and UNESCO Preservation Plan

The Save Old Goa Action Committee is urged the withdrawal of a proposed 5-star hotel project near Mount Mary Chapel in the proposed buffer zone, citing concerns about the archaeological significance of Old Goa. Their demands include a 300-meter buffer zone and the creation of a Master Plan to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage site at Old Goa, aiming for a harmonious coexistence of tourism and religious heritage.

“Three months have gone by since we asked for the IPB file with the construction details of the laterite project, they haven’t given us yet. When the govt. announced the project 17 thousand people opposed the project, but the govt. did not reject it,” said a committee member.

He further stated Old Goa being an archeological site, the govt. allegedly wants to bring an laterite resort, numbers are illegally allotted to ‘Ghost Houses’ and bungalows are built on protected areas. “We wonder if the panchayat is turning a blind eye to these issues as they have been collecting taxes for the past 15-20 years,” said another committee member.

Committee members claim that the government plans to introduce a laterite resort, with allegations of illegally allocated numbers to ‘Ghost Houses’ and construction of a bungalow on protected areas.
