Save planet from climate change: NGO

MAPUSA: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Revolutionary Goans called on locals to save the planet from climate change caused mainly due to the cutting and burning of forests. They also condemned the government for not maintaining a balance between environment and development.
The founder member of Revolutionary Goans, Manoj Parab condemned the haphazard National Highway 17 expansion work being carried out in Goa.
“Several trees are facing the axe and being uprooted due to reckless cutting, digging and the use of heavy-earth moving machines close to the roots of these age-old trees. The major cause of climate change is due to the decreasing number of trees available to capture increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. It is time for the people of Goa and the government to realise the adverse effect of this haphazard development being carried out,” said Parab.
“I hope we have learnt our lesson from the floods that occurred in Kerala. We have seen that a week of intense rain can undo all the development and investments. The highways that the governments have built over the two decades have caused a lot of harm to the environment,” he added.
