MARGAO: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar has written to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley asking for clarity on the possibility of taxing the income of seafarers and has requested him for his personal intervention in the matter so that the interests of the seafarers are protected adequately.
“I would like to mention that thousands of the Goan seafarers are in my constituency and have expressed their concern about the issue,” said Sawaikar in his letter.
“I am sure that you will appreciate that considering the fact that seafarers face lot of hardships at sea and the benefit they receive after working for so long is comparatively too less and hence they need to be protected” Sawaikar’s letter reads as.
Sawaikar wrote that it had been brought to his notice that seafarers have been brought under the Income Tax assessment following an order of an Income Tax Tribunal in Kolkata.
