SC disposes SEZ promoters’ petition

PANJIM: Days after the State government agreed to compensate the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoters, the Supreme Court disposed the petition of the SEZ promoters against Goa the government.
K Raheja, Planet Veiw, Inox Mercantile, Peninsula and Paradigm had filed a petition in the Apex Court regarding the scraping of the SEZs. 
Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), agreed to pay around Rs 256 cr to the promoters of the SEZ who have shown willingness to return 38 lakh sq m of land to the corporation. However, the promoters’ demand for 15% interest on the amount paid for the land was shot down by GIDC. 
In February, the SC had asked the State government and the promoters, to discuss and arrive at an amicable solution to resolve the SEZ litigation.
Of the seven promoters, K Raheja and Corporation, Peninsula Pharma Research Centre, Planetview Mercantile Co, Inox Mercantile Company, and Paradigm Logistics and Distribution had approached the apex court after the High Court in its judgment, in 2010, had set aside the land allotment to all SEZ promoters.
“Of the seven parties, five have asked us to refund the amount with 15% interest,” GIDC managing director Narayan Gad had said then.
Of the around 38 lakh sqm of land locked as SEZs, 24.05 lakh sqm was allotted to five companies in Verna, 12.32 lakh sqm to one company at Keri, and 2.04 lakh sqm to one company in Sancoale.
