PANJIM: The two contempt petitions filed by the Goa government against Karnataka for diverting Mhadei water is likely to come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
This is the fifth time the matter has been listed but not heard. The matter will be heard before the two Judge Bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta in Court No 2.
Also the appeals filed by three States challenging the verdict of the Inter-State Mhadei Water Disputes is also likely to come up for hearing before the Apex Court.
Since November last year, the matter has been listed for hearing but not heard. The last hearing was held in July 2023 wherein the Court had admitted a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by the Goa government challenging the decision of the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal (MWDT) granting Karnataka 13.42 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of water for its Kalasa-Bhandura drinking water-cum-irrigation project. The Tribunal Award was passed on August 14, 2018.
The Court had also asked the Goa government to produce on record the order of the State Chief Wildlife Warden restraining Karnataka from undertaking any construction work of its proposed project without obtaining permission under Section 29 of the Wildlife Protection Act.
