PANJIM: In a bid to encourage students to pursue degrees in Science, Directorate of Higher Education has amended the scholarship scheme wherein eligible candidates will be entitled to Rs 24,000 and another Rs 5,000 for purchase of books, every year.
Under this component, students scoring 75 percent and above at the Class XII exam and seeking admission for BSc will receive Rs 2,000 per month for 30 months till completion of the course. Additionally, the student will be entitled for book/equipment grant of a maximum of Rs 5,000 per year subject to production of fee receipt and relevant expenditure certificates.
As per the notification, a student should secure a minimum 60 percent in the first year and second year of the BSc course, and pass their exams in one sitting to renew their scholarship.
“In recent years, the larger trend is to join technical courses which are market driven offering better employment opportunities, quick money and comfort level. In the process pure Sciences suffer. This will have an adverse effect on supply of quality science teachers at school, higher secondary and collegiate education. It will also have an adverse impact on research and development in science. The scheme has therefore been introduced to ensure science education remains intact,” an official said.
