School headmistress killed in accident

PANJIM: A high school headmistress was killed in a fatal crash involving a sewerage tanker and two-wheeler on the busy Miramar-Campal road on Wednesday afternoon.

Pradnya Narayan Prabhu (55) was run over by the tanker, whose driver has been identified as Gauresh Marathe (37), a resident of Colvale while he tried to overtake her, a little before 1pm.
Panjim police said the Government High School, Dona Paula headmistress died enroute to Goa Medical College Hospital (GMC), Bambolim. The driver has been arrested under sections 304-A for causing death by negligence and 279 for rash driving of the Indian Penal Code.
“The driver attempted to overtake the woman rider when the bike came under the wheels of the tanker. Being in full speed, the tanker ran over the biker causing her death,” a police official said.
The accident blocked free movement of vehicular traffic for nearly two hours. Witnesses to the accident and passersby ensured that the driver did not flee from the spot and he was handed over to the police. The victim lived in the NIO colony, Dona Paula.
The investigating team is also probing whether the blockage of the road near Bal Bhavan owing to digging works could also have resulted in the accident as the riders/drivers look for an alternative route to reach the adjoining roads.
