SCHOOL HEIST SPREE: 3rd school burgled in Mormugao

Thieves decamp with Rs 50k; St Theresa School at Mangor and Infant Jesus Academy at Velsao were targeted last week

VASCO: Thieves struck Mormugao taluka again on Monday as they stole Rs 50,000 from a Dabolim high school, making it the third high school in the taluka to get burgled within a fortnight.

According to information given by the Vasco police, the unidentified persons entered into the Keshav Smurti School, Dabolim and stole Rs 50,000. The thieves entered in by breaking the lock of the main door. The theft might have occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The theft came to light when staff found lock open and the offices of the headmistress and the principal of the higher secondary school rummaged and cash missing from the cupboard.

Reacting to the spate of thefts reported in the Mormugao taluka, school headmistress Sushma Korgaonkar has requested the Directorate of Education to provide security during night hours, irrespective of the students’ strength in the school.

This is the third high school targeted by the thieves after St Theresa School at Mangor and Infant Jesus Academy at Velsao last week. In all the cases, the thieves have stolen cash.

When contacted, Director of Education Shailesh Sinai Zingde said that school managements should take measures to provide security as the government has been releasing maintenance grants to them.

“Even government schools have been targeted by some miscreants at Davorlim, Zambaulim and one in Bardez taluka,” Zingde said.
