Schools urged to promote sports and sportspersons

PANJIM: Directorate of Education has urged all government and government aided schools and higher secondary schools to register under the Central government programme ‘National Talent Search and Nurture Initiative’, aimed at development of sports in schools. 
In May, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and School Sports Promotion Foundation (SSPF) under the administrative control of Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resources Department (HRD), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to offer various facilities for the development of sports in schools under the National Talent Search and Nurture Initiative. 
Through this initiative, talented children will be selected at the grassroots level and groomed by various tournaments and coaching camps. “It is therefore, enjoyed upon all the heads of the government, government aided primary, secondary, higher secondary and special schools to join the movement of promoting sports and sportspersons and also create a positive environment for development of sports in Schools,” Education Director G P Bhat said in a circular issued on Monday. 
The aim of the national talent hunt is to produce a long line of champions, who can represent the country at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and other sporting events. 
The candidates selected at the national level will get a chance to live in a Centre of Excellence (COE), integrated residential school facilities, and would be trained by some of the best national and international coaching teams.
