MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) on Tuesday made a scathing attack on the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), avccusing it of misleading the public and the High Court on garbage management.
SCM Convenor Savio Coutinho challenged the MMC to reveal where the RDF shed is located and questioned how the civic body was getting away with its lies when other panchayats and municipalities are penalised on these issues.
Coutinho criticised MMC for appointing an agency without following codal formalities, making payments of Rs 15 lakh a month and granting it an extension. He further questioned how MMC was refraining from treating the wet waste collected but was instead merely handing over to the bioremediation contractor, whereby additional crores of Rs are spent for the same.
SCM made these charges in reaction to the explanatory note circulated, and likely to be discussed at the MMC council meeting scheduled for December 5. SCM also exposed what the Council had stated earlier about door-to-door waste collection being carried out efficiently, with 80% wet waste being segregated.
“However, the Rs 3.30 crore bill of the Hindustan Waste Treatment Company reveals that 14,380 cu mts was found accumulated inside the plant at Sonsoddo, and was bioremediated. And out of these 14,380 cu mts of accumulated waste, 8,628 cu mts of waste was found to be RDF material. This is proof enough of how efficient their door-to-door waste collection is,” Coutinho stated.
