MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) questioned the intention of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) to shift 40 tonnes of wet waste to Saligao Plant.
SCM pointed out that the waste collected by MMC doesn’t conform to the specifications of ‘wet waste’, a fact they (SCM) have been consistently raising.
SCM also questioned the selection of the agencies by MMC for such tasks, alleging that there was direct political influence despite the fact there were questions of fraudulent payments and alleged siphoning of public funds.
“As the collected waste is in a mixed form, the Saligao Plant contractor, who also happens to be the bioremediation contractor at Sonsodo, will bill MMC Rs 1840 per cubic metre of waste. Considering that 1 tonne is equivalent to 1.80 cu.m, the charges for 40 tonnes would work out to 1,32,840 per day. Keeping in mind the transportation costs, the daily expenses would be a whooping two lakhs per day,” said Coutinho.
