MARGAO: Shadow Council for Margao on Wednesday demanded that Margao Councillors be made accountable to pay the Rs 1. 2 crore fine imposed by Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) in May 2019, following the pollution caused by the fire incident at Sonsoddo.
“It was very astonishing to witness the urgent meeting of the Margao Municipal Council which was attended by only 13 out of 25 councillors”, SCM Convener Savio Coutinho lamented.
“Since the notice, for the last 6 months these councillors were occupied fully in making merry at the cost of taxpayers’ money by way of junkets”, the SCM charged.
“This matter was not taken seriously by them, knowing well that they would not have to pay the ‘fine’,” Coutinho said.
“So also, most councillors who returned from the Mount Abu trip were not present. Probably, if the meeting was to discuss the distribution of Rs 1.02 cr among councillors, all 25 would be present”, Coutinho said.
Condemning the lack of seriousness among these councillors, the SCM charged them with having no regards so whatsoever to the public funds, and demanded that they be held accountable to pay the fine amount.
